Newseum & Voice of America
Washington, D.C.
October 16, 2008

Join us for an exciting day in Washington, D.C. We depart Newport News at 6:30 a.m. from the main parking lot at the Yoder Barn Theatre (boarding our motor coach at 6:15 a.m.). Morning snacks are included.

Our first stop is a guided behind-the-scenes studio tour of Voice of America.  Voice of America, a 24-hour, international multimedia news broadcast facility, went on the air in 1942.  Each week more than 1,000 hours of news, information, educational, and cultural programming are broadcast in 45 languages to an estimated worldwide audience of 115 million people.

We arrive at the Newseum (located directly across the street from the Smithsonian’s National Gallery of Art) at 11:30 a.m. where we begin our exploration with an orientation film.  Afterwards enjoy lunch in the food court ($15 lunch vouchers included) and begin a self-guided tour of the Newseum.  The Newseum opened in April, 2008 in a spectacular building on Pennsylvania Avenue.  It offers visitors an experience blending five centuries of news history with up-to-the second technology and 14 hands-on major thematic exhibits.   Additionally there are two live broadcasting studios and 15 theatres. Among the theatre choices, you can  hear Edward R. Murrow on a London rooftop as he delivers a live radio report during World War II or Nellie Bly as she exposes horrendous conditions in a 19th century insane asylum.  In another theatre see some of the most dramatic events in journalism history recreated in a 3-D film with fourth-dimension special effects.  There is shopping in four distinctive shopping areas within the building!

We depart the Newseum at 4:30 p.m. for the quick trip to Union Station.  Enjoy dinner on your own in the food court or restaurants or stroll through the bustling retail center. Union Station, opened on October 27, 1907, is considered to be one of the finest examples of the Beaux-Arts style of architecture. Following three years of renovation at a cost of $160 million, Union Station reopened on September 29, 1988 - restored to its former glory.

We depart Washington, D.C. at 6 p.m. and arrive back to the Yoder Barn by approximately 9 p.m.
